Telepresence Robots: A Promising Solution for Inclusive Tertiary Education?

Are telepresence robots the answer to making tertiary education more accessible for students with disabilities? According to a small-scale project by TAFE QLD North and the NDCO Program, the answer is a resounding "yes!"

The project aimed to test the usage of telepresence robotics technology as a reasonable adjustment for students with disabilities. Telepresence robots allow individuals to participate in class environments without being physically present. These robots have artificial intelligence that enables them to avoid obstacles and falls and can be controlled remotely.

The trial involved taking the robot to various classroom settings at TAFE QLD North and seeking feedback from staff and students. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with both groups feeling that the robot could have a positive application in the tertiary environment, including as a reasonable adjustment for people with disabilities.

Students and staff also noted that the robot was easy to use, and the many functions of the robot were readily apparent. However, there were some concerns, including the need for a reliable connection, security and administrative processes to mitigate privacy concerns, and managing the supply and demand for the technology.

Despite these concerns, the potential for telepresence robots to provide a reasonable adjustment for students with disabilities in tertiary education settings is significant. With the refinement of implementation, this technology could have broad applications, providing people with varied options for participation in education.
